SIMPLE BEGINNER PATTERNS FOR KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS Additional patterns are available by contacting Joleen at 280-2836. We have some donated patterns and pattern books available for use of our members. WARM UP AMERICAN AFGHAN BLOCKS -- 7" x 9" (make sure to measure) block patterns for both crochet and knit are located at the following website: http://www.warmupamerica.com/patterns.html. CROCHET: HAT (size H crochet hook, 4 oz skein of yarn) Size given is small, and in brackets are medium and large) Ch 33 (38, 42). Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in next 27 (30, 34) sts, sl st in next 4 (6, 6) stst for top, ch 1 to turn all rows. ROW 2: Working thru BACK LP ONLY, sl ST IN 1ST 4 (6,6) STS, SC IN REM 28 (31, 36) STS. ROW 3: Sc in 1st 28 (31, 35) sts, sl st in rem 4 (6, 6) sts. Rep Rows 2 and 3 alternately until piece measures 12 1/2 (15, 17 1/2) inches. Tie off. Gather sl st edge tog. Sew back seam. With Pom Pon maker, make a 3" pom-pon and attach to top. Fold bottom for brim. I have used a 4-ply yarn along with a 2-ply yarn together to give a tweed look to the hats. I have also used two strands of 4-ply yarn and a larger hook (J or K) for a thicker hat. This also speeds up the work as well. I have placed "stripes" in the hats to use up yarn, but always end the row at the top or the slip stitch end because of the end pieces of yarn. SCARF Ch 165 (180, 195) sc in 2nd ch from ht and in ea ch across. Ch 1 to turn all rows. ROW 2: Working thu BACK LP ONLY, sc in ea st across. Rep row 2 until piece measures 6 (7, 8)". Tie off. FRINGE: Cut yarn into 6" lengths. Using 6 strands at once, tie fringe at end of ea ridge along both ends. Trim ends even. As you can tell this scarf is made lengthwise. The ridges made in both patterns makes the hats and scarf really look nice. MITTENS ROW 2: Working in BACK LOOP ONLY, sc in ea sc and sl st in ea sl st of previous row. Rep row 2 until there are 6 (8, 10) ridges, or desired width of hand. SHAPE THUMB; Work cuff, wrist and 5 (6, 7) sts of hand, ch 12 (14, 16), sc in 5 (6, 7) th st from end of hand on opposite side, finish row. NEXT ROW: Work to ch, sc in next 4 (5, 6) chs, sl st next 4 sts, sc in rem sts of ch, finish row. Rep last row 3 (4, 5) times. Tie off. Fold in half. Sew sides leaving cuff sts free. Work 1 row sc, evenly spaced around cuff. Make other mitten the same. NOTE: If making baby mittens, leave off the thumb and put a ch attached to each mitten that can be threaded through the arms and back of the coat so that the child/parent does not loose the mittens. LAP ROBES FOR RESIDENTS IN NURSING HOMES -- You are welcome to use any pattern you wish. Generally the measurements are about a yard or 34 inches long (more or less), and about 24 inches wide (more or less). Do not put fringe on the lap robe as it can become caught up in the resident's wheelchairs. Best rule of thumb, just "try it on" yourself to see if it is about the right length and width. PRIZE WINNING AFGHAN Note: Count ch 3 at end of each rows as 1 dc. In the last 2 rows ch 6, not 10 for lps. ROW 1: Ch 253, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 9 chs, ch 10 sk 10 chs (this makes lp) *dc in next 10 ch, ch 10, sk 10 chs. Repeat from* until there are 13 groups of dcs and 12 lps, ch 3, turn. ROW 2: Dc in next 9 dcs, ch 10, sk lp, *dc in next 10 dcs, ch 10, sk lp, repeat from *, ch 3, turn. Repeat rown 2 until there are 116 rows. Fasten off. To finish lps: Start at bottom of afghan and with fingers pull first lp over 2nd lp, pull 2nd lp through, 2nd lp over 3rd, 3rd through, Repeat to end, fasten last 2 lps tog with safety pin. (Be sure all lps go in same direction.) Fringe: Cut 10 inch lengths of yarn, fold in half. Knot one folded strand in each sc at top and bottom, trim fringe evenly. FAST, EASY AND PRETTY AFGHAN Materials: Size P or N crochet hook. Up to 3 skeins of yarn are need to make this afghan. You can make it to your size requirements (use buy enough yarn to start with).
